What items besides food and water should you buy Duplicates/Triplicates Plus to have on hand in the event of TEOTWAWKI and retail stores no longer exist? Obviously this depends on your budget and space to maintain them. To simplify things for this thread, let's exclude cars and other high priced items. After your input, I'll probably start another thread asking to rank these items by importance/necessity. If you think some items are a luxury rather than necessity, feel free to say.

I'll...

The front door

Today I started tearing apart the wall around the front door and window. The single pane window had to go. It was letting water leak in, spent most of the day cutting out rot under the window, plus the old window was letting dust blow in, allowing too much heat to escape in the winter and heat to get in when the air conditioner is on.
The wall was uninsulated.
All the electrical was that 50+ year old obsolete 2 wire, 14ga no ground stuff.
So then there was the front door really nothing wrong...

IMAG0273.

So you are working on your supplies ehh? What are you doing for long term food, medical, first aid type products and what holes do you still need to fill. How are you storing your supplies and do you have any methods to your plan that may be good nuggets for others.

In my case, the above pic is one of my containers with some of my long term storage for medical. I mark each case with a letter so I can quickly identify what category the contents are. I live in...

Kerosene pressure lamps

I'm sure there is some of the old "playing with fire" curiosity pushing this, but I'm using my lanterns so much as reading lights that the neighbors probably wonder if I have power. (I met a neighbor kid the other day that thought my house was vacant, so I must be doing something right.) I would love to be able to sit outside with a silent Aladdin mantle lamp on the table, but the slightest breeze is troublesome to them.

After using Coleman gas lanterns outside for so long it's become as...

Best Weapon to Keep on Hand for SHTF/TEOTWAWKI for someone living in the City

Preface: Though many of you may disagree, for myself I define SHTF as when Law Enforcement stops existing throughout all of the United States and I don't have to worry about legal ramifications about shooting someone who is breaking into my apartment or trying to attack me. Thus for myself personally, I wouldn't consider Katrina, SHTF, not that having a gun or rifle on hand during Katrina wouldn't help.

I have never really fired a gun, rifle, shotgun, etc., and totally realize that a person...

How Much Clear Space is Around Your House

I live in a coastal rain forest. The native flora here doesn't just grow, it explodes. One day it is neatly cut back, a month later it has intruded two feet into my clear space.

We have a "Green Belt" between residences here of 10', but I keep things pretty well trimmed to that "Border".

I have a plan for placing deterrents into the Green Belt, but cannot implement that until a SHTF event occurs. There is only twenty feet between my home and the Green Belt behind me. Not much of a...

So I have sensors around my house pretty much tell me if unwanted persons come into my yards.

Due to the nature of my yard sensors they wont pick up cats or dogs just...

Denial Explained - the Normalcy Bias

We've all had friends who refused to look at reality, but leave it to shrinks to come up with a nice clinical sounding name for it: The normalcy bias!

(a.k.a. denial, the ostrich response, etc...)

Normalcy bias is why most people can't face a large crisis. Large, as in a real-time economic collapse or peak oil. Here's a perfect little blurb on normalcy bias I found at THIS site:

Return of the Gray Man???

Over the last few months I have pretty much withdrawn to the farm and gone all hermit like. In part due to some lingering health problems left over from last year near fatal Sepsis. In part due to the general population disgust me. In part because the outside world is just getting to damn crowded. I have not even been to a Farmers Market in two Months because I was getting more than a little annoyed with the average market shopper. When you have pasture and woods raised pork that is...
